Obituary Overview
Kaethe Wolf
Kaethe Wolf (nee Herdtle) passed away peacefully in her sleep of heart failure on April 6th. She was predeceased by Kurt Wolf, her husband of 65 years. Born in Hohenbirken, Germany and emigrating to Canada shortly after the war, the couple settled in Guelph, ON.
She will be fondly remembered by her daughter, Brigitte Wolf and her partner, Bryan Anderson, as well as her 3 grandchildren, Sarah Puddy Richardson and her husband, Nick, Michael Puddy, and Cedric Puddy and his partner Stephanie Smith. Also survived by her great grandchildren, Talya and Cadence.
Her early life was marked by growing up during the Great Depression and World War 2. And yet she also enjoyed cycling, skiing and mountain climbing in the Alps in her youth, before moving to Canada. She worked for many years in the kitchen at St Joseph’s Hospital. Together with other German immigrants, she and Kurt were founding members of the German Canadian Club in Guelph. At the club she used her culinary and organizational skills to cater many of the events and dinners that were held there.
One of my parents great joys was to spend time at their cottage on Lake Eugenia near Beaver Valley. Kurt liked to spend time fishing while Kaethe could often be found working on one of the many beautiful needle-work pictures that she completed over the years. Together they both enjoyed swimming. Indeed a part of their cottage routine was a daily swim in the lake before breakfast. Cottage guests often found themselves quietly drummed into joining this refreshing ritual!
Kaethe had a facility with numbers and an excellent memory, qualities which also served her well when playing cards. She was an avid card-player. As well, she enjoyed reading, and even managed to learn how to use an e-reader in her 90’s, until her eye-sight deteriorated to the point where this was no longer possible. She was a keen, and knowledgeable, sports fan and she and her SIL, Bryan, would often have post game debriefing sessions and share sports talk.
More recently, Kaethe moved from Parkside Place, where she had lived for many years, to a retirement home in Goderich to be closer to family. The move to Goderich Place was a happy one and she was well liked and well cared for by the staff there.
She had often quipped that she would ‘live to be a hundred or die in the attempt’. At 94 she had made a good run. Those of us left behind will cherish her memory, secure in knowing that her love never faltered.
Memorial Service will be held at Memory Gardens Funeral Home, Breslau on Monday, April 16, 2018 at 1 pm followed by Interment and a Reception.
