ROSS, Joseph Randall – 93, Blanche, passed away October 20, 2018 in Bay Side Home, Barrington. Born in Cape Negro, he was a son of the late, Captain William L. and Anna “Jenny” (Smith) Ross. He attended the one room school at Cape Negro until his parents died when he was 15 years old. He moved to Halifax and worked in dining cars of the C. N. Railway until he was old enough to attend R. N. nurses training by Sisters of Montreal. After graduation he took advanced medical instructions with Monks at the Priory in Pennsylvania and later the Belliveau Hospital, New York City. He later worked several years at the Montreal Neurological Hospital, Montreal, prior to studies and graduation in Hospital Administration from University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon. He married his beloved wife, Peggy in 1947 and they were engaged in medical work with the Cree Indians of Northern Manitoba and the Ennu—Eskimoes of Baffin Island and Ungava Bay. He is well remembered for making several long and difficult dog team trips to isolated Eskimo settlements for medical matters. When he retired from Federal Health Service and left North he was an associate lecturer in several colleges in England where he and Peggy lived for 12 years. They eventually retired and lived at their summer home at Blanche, NS. He had written four local history books and also wrote Public Health material in native dialects while in the North. He was a member of the Hospital Administrators Association of Canada, Canadian Executives Overseas, Toronto, the Chieftain of Clan Ross Nova Scotia, Member of Royal Society of St. George, England. He was a very proud when elected F.R.S.H, a Fellowship Royal Society of Health, London, England. An Associate of the Order of St. Augustine associated with St. Joseph’s Priory, Springfield. He had many international friends in Russia, Germany, England, and Malta. He is survived by his son, George (Lisa); grandson, Nathan, both of Calgary, AB; sister, Alva Jean Jones, Niagara Falls; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife, Peggy; four brothers, Jarius, Burnley, George, Allison; sister, Leah (Ross) Smith. There will be no flowers or visitation by request. The Funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 23, 2 p.m., at the St. Matthew’s United Church, Clyde River, with Reverend Doug Chard officiating. There will be a graveside committal following the service in the Ross family plot, Seaview Cemetery, Cape Negro. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
