Obituary Overview
John Wasyliw
April 26, 1922 – June 26, 2018
Another Soldier has passed on. John left us, peacefully, with family at his side at the Grace Hospital.
John was born and raised on the family farm near Fraserwood, MB. He was the older son with a younger brother Bill. When John was 12, his mother Anna passed away and John, at this early age, like many others of his generation, helped keep the farm going. This was the beginning of John’s strong, lifelong work ethic.
Though he never fought overseas, he was proud to have trained in the armed forces during World War 2 as a gunner in the artillery. This experience off the farm led him to realize his future was not in farming. He moved to Winnipeg, where he worked and lived for the rest of his life.
He married the love of his life, Rose (nee Strilkiwski) in November, 1948. After the marriage ceremony in Winnipeg they rented a Grey Hound bus and took the entire wedding party and friends to a traditional country wedding celebration not far from Ethelbert, MB. That celebration was the talk of the area for months afterwards.
For over 20 years John worked at Nu Way as an expert upholsterer. He then became a school custodian in the St. James – Assiniboia School Division for 16 years until his retirement in 1987. John continued to work part-time with Winnipeg Enterprises. This allowed him to enjoy Bomber and Jets games until 2004. He and Rose went on many car vacations as well as bus tours to many North American locations.
John’s hobbies were billiards and gardening. It is estimated that he regularly planted gardens for well over 70 years. He enjoyed sharing the garden produce with as many people as he could. For many years he and Rose volunteered at St. Basil’s Church as part of the perogy making crew. He also volunteered at the Deer Lodge Centre for over 25 years.
John was a calm, intelligent, hard-working, dedicated family man who could always be counted on to help his family. He was also a respected member of his church, who was well-liked wherever he worked or volunteered.
He is lovingly remembered by wife of 70 years, Rose; Son Douglas (special friend Phyllis), Daughter-in-law Laverne; Grand-daughters Anastasia (Evan), Alexandra (great-granddaughter Neytiri), and Jillian; Grandson Jordan (Julie), Wasyliw and Strilkiwski family members, as well as many friends. He was pre-deceased by son, Kenneth; his father and mother Harry and Anna; brother Bill, sister-in-law Grace, and numerous relatives.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at St. Basil’s Ukrainian Church, 202 Harcourt Street with a reception to follow. Interment at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Avenue. Reverend Michael Kwiatkowski will officiate. Pallbearers are grandchildren Anastasia, Alexandra, Jordan and Jillian Wasyliw, brother-in-law Lawrence Strilkiwski and friend Morley Luhowy. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
