John Sinclair Lockerbie, husband of Ethel Lockerbie, R.N., of Edward Street, Miramichi, passed away peacefully at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at the age of 81.
Born in Loggieville, on June 22, 1936, he was the son of the late Lomond and Marion (Walsh) Lockerbie. A lifetime resident of the Miramichi, John (Johnny) was raised in Loggieville and graduated from Chatham High School. In 1960 he married the love of his life. He eventually started a small insurance agency in the former Town of Newcastle, making many close friends in the industry.
A big part of his life was raising a family of three on Sweeney Lane. Summers were spent at the cottage at East Point where he enjoyed preparing Sunday family barbecues and playing frequent card games. After retiring to Nelson, one of his passions was gardening as part of his love for the outdoors. When he wasn’t gardening, he enjoyed reading and planning his next project.
He is survived by his wife, the former Ethel Cameron, R.N.; two daughters, Lynn MacKay (Scott) and Nancy Lockerbie Pierce (Ross); one son, Brad Lockerbie (Ken Dean); four grandchildren, Andrew, Jane, Maddison and Cameron; one sister, Sharon Walsh (David); one brother James Lockerbie (Barbara). He was predeceased by his parents; his twin infant sister, Agnes; one sister, Elizabeth McLaughlin and her husband, Warren.
He was known for his sense of humour and quick wit. Hunting, fishing and trips to the camp with his close friends were special occasions for him.
He was involved in community activities. A lifetime member of the Newcastle Lions Club and recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award, he spent many hours with his close friends in service of the community. He was a member of St. James and St. John United Church serving as trustee for many years.
The family would like to thank Dr. Camille Haddad, the Extra Mural Nursing Program, the Palliative Care team and especially family and friends for their support.
Visitation was held at Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King St., on Friday. Funeral service was held from St. James and St. Johns United Church, Miramichi, on Saturday, February 3, 2018, at 2 pm, conducted by Rev. Alice Szemok. The music for the service was provided by David Bunnell and the church choir and the hymns were “Surely the Presence of the Lord is in This Place”, “In the Bulb There is a Flower”, “Abide With Me” and the recessional hymn was “Go Now In Peace”. Special music “When I’ve Gone the Last Mile of the Way” was performed by Al Fraser. The eulogy was offered by Nancy Lockerbie Pierce and the scriptures were read by Andrew and Jane MacKay. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Miramichi, later in the spring.
A group of Lions Club members were present and sat as a body for the service.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Extra Mural Nursing Program, the Canadian Cancer Society or any charity of the donors’ choice would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King St., Miramichi, telephone 773-3492 or messages of condolence may be sent online to www.adamsfh.ca
