Peacefully at home with his family by his side, John Nixon died on July 25th after a brief battle with cancer in his 69th year. Beloved husband for 48 years to Barbara (nee Hallford). Loving father of Jennifer Nixon-Edwards (Kyle), Kristina Smart (Matt), Paul Nixon (Fanamphet), and Katie Nixon. Adored Poppa of Fiona, Liam, Connor, and Griffin. Cherished son of Mary Bliss of Stoney Creek. Dear brother of Mark (Brenda), and Barbara (Mark). Brother-in-law of Marianne Pearson (David), and Phil Hallford. Predeceased by his father Jack Nixon. John was a secondary school teacher and guidance counsellor with the Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board for 35 years at Bishop Ryan, St. Jean de Brebeuf, and St. Thomas More Secondary Schools. He was the Hamilton Spectator Teacher of the year in 1992. John enjoyed writing and was proud of his Career Workbook series, his novel Redcoat 1812, and his contribution to the Hamilton Magazine Historicity. Special thanks to Drs. Talman, Ainsworth, Lamy and nursing staff at the Hamilton General Hospital for their care and compassion. At John’s request, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at P.X. DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 796 Upper Gage Ave., on Sunday, July 29th from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Prayers will be said on Sunday at (time to be confirmed). A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 260 Herkimer Street, on Monday, July 30th at (time to be confirmed). Burial to take place at a later date at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cancer Assistance Program (CAP) would be appreciated by the family. On-line condolences can be made to www.dermodys.com
