It is with great sadness that we the family of John Murphy announce his passing on December 8, 2018 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital at the age of 93.
Born on January 6, 1925 in Barra Head, Richmond Co., he was the son of the late George and Catherine (MacDonald) Murphy.
He worked at the Cape Breton Hospital for 34 years starting as an attendant and retiring in 1991 as Director of Maintenance. John was a member of St. Mary’s Parish and tireless community worker in Big Pond. He was also a founding member of the Big Pond Concert and Volunteer Fire Dept.
A loving father, he is survived by his eight children: Diane (Norman) Thompson, Sydney River, Robert, Big Pond, George (Joan), Big Pond, Elizabeth, Bedford, Joseph, Spruce Grove, Alberta, Gerard (Patricia), St. Peter’s, Patrick (Gina), Howie Centre, Bernard (Tracy), Big Pond, 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
He is also survived by sisters Emma Couckuyt, Grand Bend, Ontario and Anna Touesnard, River Bourgeois; sisters-in-law Christie White, Margaret MacInnis, Charlotte Mulak and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his cherished wife, Bernadette, an infant son, and grandson, Breton Murphy; sisters, Catherine, Muriel, Theresa, Frances, Margaret, brothers Peter, Ernest, William and Joseph.
We are grateful to the staff of Mira Bay Harbourstone Enhanced Care for the loving care they gave to our Dad during his time there.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm on Wednesday, December 12 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St, Sydney. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 13 at St. Mary’s Church, Big Pond.
Memorial donations may be made to the St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery Fund, Big Pond or charity of choice.
