Johannes De Leyer
December 9, 1931 – July 28, 2018
It is with great sadness that the family of John de Leyer announce his passing on July 28, 2018. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 59 years, Louisa (Loes) and children: Maria (Pete) Van Velzen, Sheldon, Iowa; John de Leyer Jr., Barrhead; Britta (DougStanding), St. Albert, AB; Carol (Dave) Haarsma, Spruce Grove, AB; Henry (Hilda Van Haren), Spruce Grove, AB; Michele (Dan Gravel), Lloydminster, AB; 11 grandchildren, Jennie (Juan) Rosales, Joanna, John (Megan Bouwman), Kristi (Colton) Harthoorn, Kevin, Robyn, Cameron, Jonathan (Justine Alkema), Jillian (Brandon) Neven, Joshua & Emma; 7 great-grandchildren, Mayah, Elias, Liam, Spencer, Skylar, Gracie & Charlie. Predeceased by two grandchildren, William Van Velzen and Kristen Standing. Johannes Josephus (John) was born in Waalwijk, The Netherlands, December 9, 1931, the eldest of five children. John had a happy childhood and was close to his brothers and sister. Together they got through the difficult times of World War II. He worked at the family bakery until he felt the call to an adventure called immigration. He chose Canada and at the age of 22 moved to Manitoba and worked on a farm for a year. After that he tried many different jobs in the West from coal mining to baking to forestry. He contemplated gold mining in the Yukon and got as far as Prince George, BC. It was winter and he decided that it was not such a great idea after all. In 1959 John returned to the Netherlands and married Louisa (Loes) Dijkmeijer. They started their adventure in southern Alberta with John working at the Lethbridge Research Station and renting a farm in Magrath. In the meantime, five children were born between 1959 and 1965. John and Loes worked very hard on the farm to provide for the family. In 1971 they purchased a farm and moved to Vauxhall. In 1974 the last baby was born. In 1981 John and Loes decided to move to another farm in Busby. They remained there until 1993 when they retired and moved to an acreage near Barrhead. In 2001 they moved into Barrhead. John kept a large garden and did a lot of wood work in the basement. John and Loes cultivated many close relationships which included frequent road trips to visit family and friends.
