Obituary for
Joan Elizabeth McCallum (Bowers)
Joan McCallum (nee Bowers) died peacefully in the early hours of May 7, 2018 at the Ottawa General Hospital. She was the dearly beloved and loving wife of the late Jason McCallum and the proud mother of Ian. She leaves behind a large and loving family of Ian, his wife Stephani and their children Rory, Caitlin, Griffin and Althea of Ottawa. She was the only daughter of Henry and Annie V. Bowers who predeceased her. Her only brother was the late Dorrance Bowers of Kelowna, B.C. who is survived by his wife Ruth. Joan graduated from the University of Toronto Trinity College in 1949 where she found her lifelong passion for education and dear friends she stayed in touch with for the rest of her life. Joan had a tremendous career through the Ontario Department of Education, ending as Professor Emeritus in the Faculty of Education at York University. She was a fierce, independent woman who was a trailblazer in countless ways. She loved to travel the world exploring many places off the beaten path, and she shared that love of travel with friends and family. Friends are invited to visit at St. Martin’s Anglican Church, 2120 Prince Charles Road, Ottawa on Friday, May 18, 2018 from 10:30a.m. – 11:00a.m. Memorial Service in the Church at 11:00a.m. Reception to follow.
