Obituary for Janis « John » Galdins
Born in Riga, Latvia on March 30, 1939 to Valdemars and Elza Galdins and died on January 23, 2018 in Ottawa. Passed away peacefully in hospital with his immediate family by his side. Beloved husband of Ligita and loving father to Laura and Robert (Amber). Cherished grandpa to Racheal, Katherine, Alex and Thomas. Predeceased by brother Juris. Dear brother of Gunda Bernaus (Olgerts) and uncle to Sandra (Miguel), David (Kim) and Andy Bernaus. Fondly remembered by aunt Biruta Taube (Erik) and other dear relatives and friends in Canada, U.S.A. and Latvia.
John worked as an engineer for the Federal government and had several interesting overseas assignments with Terra Surveys. He was active in his church and in the Latvian community of Ottawa.
Thank you to the kind and compassionate staff of Grace Manor who helped John in the last year of his journey and thank you to the equally kind and compassionate staff of the Civic hospital who helped the whole family during the last difficult week.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Occupation Museum in Riga, Peace Latvian Ev. Lutheran Church in Ottawa or to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
Friends are invited to the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor) on Friday, February 2, 2018 from 6-8pm and on Saturday, February 3, 2018 from 10am until time of the service in the chapel at 11am. Reception to immediately follow.
