Obituary of James Lawrason
LAWRASON, James Alexander “Alex” – Passed away peacefully at Peterborough Retirement Residence, on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 after saying good bye to his family. Alex of Peterborough, formerly of Toronto, Pembrooke, Oakville, Vancouver, Victoria, and Dundas, Ontario at 100 years of age.
Alex, beloved husband of Jean Edwards Mayhew (1920-2006). He is survived by his eight children Vicki (Tiyt Matros), Robert Lawrason, David Lawrason, June (Doug Reneau), Barbara (William Shaw), Patti (James Blair), Alan Lawrason (Janet) and Sandra Lawrason. Lovingly remembered as “Grumps” by his 17 grandchildren: Jake Rohn, Elke Cardell, Max Rohn, Blair & Scott Lawrason, Derek & Alexandra “Ally” Reneau, Meghan Shaw-Atkinson, Heather & Patricia Shaw, Tanya Milburn, Jean, John & Daniel Blair, and Peter, Sarah & Emily Lawrason. Proud Great-grandfather of 10. Son of the late Wilkie and Rene Lawrason, and brother of the late Jean Twist, Beth MacDonald, Ruth Paget and Margery Montgmery, and brother Jardine “Jim” Lawrason.
He enlisted in the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry and served in Normandy as Lieutenant, where he was wounded in 1944, for which he proudly received the French Legion of Honour medal in 2017.
Alex was loved and admired for his positive spirit, humor, generosity and for the fullness of life he shared with his beloved wife Jean. Beyond raising eight children, they travelled the world together and worked in the community while Alex built a successful business career, retiring as CEO of Eddy Match Ltd. He was a long-time member of the Peterborough Chapter of Probus and a Board Member of Community Futures Peterborough. An avid Bridge player and golfer, Alex was a long-time member of the Peterborough Golf & Country Club. He wrote two books of memoirs and stories; Ice in My Milk, and More Ice in My Milk.
A memorial reception will be held in the Reception Room of The Village Inn, 39 Queen Street, Lakefield, on Saturday, November 17, 2018 from 2-4 pm with words of remembrance at 3 pm. Donations to the Salvation Army or a charity of your choice, along with condolence notes may be made through www.communityalternative.ca. The family deeply appreciated the great care, love and good humour shown by the palliative care team and all the staff of Peterborough Retirement Residence.
