Obituary for
Hugh William Campbell
It is with profound sadness we announce that after a valiant struggle to regain his health, Hugh passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 16, 2018 while the family watched over him. Thank you to the team at the ICU/Soins Intensif Hull, headed by Dr. Jane Matthew and so many nurses and RTs and other Assistants who cared for him so well.
Hugh was born in Edmonton, Alberta January 18, 1941, the son of Helena and Bob Campbell. He grew up there then at 19 moved to BC, started a family and began his first career at Bank of Montreal. He returned to Edmonton and while still working enrolled at the University of Alberta to obtain a teaching certificate. In his 2nd career he taught high school math in St Albert before taking his family on a two year teaching exchange in Hervey Bay, Australia. This must have awakened his love of travel and when he returned to Canada he switched to career number 3 by purchasing Argyll Travel and made it a family business. He embraced the travel industry and joined ACTA (Association of Canadian Travel
Agencies). He worked up through provincial associations and was elected ACTA National President. This was just at the time the industry changed forever when the Airlines rescinded commission. In typical Hugh fashion he rose to that challenge during his term spearheading the fight for the travel community.
He was a proud member of Skal Edmonton and later Skal Ottawa.
In 2000 he moved to Ottawa to begin a new chapter in his life and married Debbie in 2004. He did the accounting at Marlin Travel until he retired in 2014. Then moved to Grand Lake Quebec to Kilima – the house on top of the hill and though he loved the view and the wildlife he was never crazy about the steps.
Hugh is survived by his wife Debbie (Frank), his children Sue (Miles), Bob (Sharon), Steve (Tina), his sister Lois Beers (Mervyn) and the Irish clan, his grandchildren Brennan, Jesse, Brett and Lex and the entire Frank Family.
Hugh was a kind and gentle man who loved his family and his friends and he will be greatly missed by us all. He loved music and played the coronet; a highlight for him came in 1954 when he attended the Grey Cup in Toronto with the Edmonton Boys Band. He loved all things sports, his teams being the Edmonton Eskimos and the Oilers and later he came around to cheering for the Senators and the Red Blacks. He curled out of Spruce Grove and enjoyed the bonspiels and the camaraderie and had many stories of his time “making the ice”. He loved to travel and never said no to Deb’s crazy trips ideas Including 6 months in Ireland running his sisters restaurant ‘Smuggler’s Table’. He is a former member of the Derrick Golf Club and now a member of the Royal Ottawa Golf Club so it is fitting that we invite all his friends to join our family at the Club on Aylmer Road Sunday May 27th from 5 -7 to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers a donation to the charity of your choice would be welcome.
