Obituary for

Helen Ludwig
1924-2018
It is with sadness the family of Helen Ludwig announces her passing at the age of 93. Our Mum and Oma passed away peacefully at the Luther Home on Monday, July 23, 2018.
Helen was predeceased by her husband Frank. Left to mourn are her three children, Karin (Henry), Eric, and Gilbert (Sandra); grandchildren, Christina (J.P.), Melanie (Leon); great-grandchildren, Cora, Ani, Xavier, Helena, Bettina, and Louen; and sister Olga and family in Germany.
Helen was born in Losowaja, Ukraine where she enjoyed a wonderful childhood until the age of 12 when her father was taken from the family. This event changed her life and the lives of her mother and sister. The turmoil of WWII followed, bringing years of hardship and difficulties. During this time, she became a nurse, working in army hospitals in the Ukraine and Germany. She married Frank, they left Germany and immigrated to Canada to start a new life after the birth of their daughter Karin, leaving behind her sister and mother. The family moved to their own home in North Kildonan after the birth of her sons, Eric and Gilbert, Helen’s community of 60+ years. Many great years were also spent at the cottage at Nutimik Lake with friends and family.
In the early 60’s Helen began a new career working a variety of roles in delis and bakeries. The last 30 years or so were spent at the Bake Oven, where she made lifelong friends with whom she traveled, played cards, and enjoyed many outings to bingo, the casino, and shopping trips, usually being the chauffeur. These friendships were a great comfort to her after her husband died. The hardest was losing her independence as she grew older.
Her dedication to her family was evident through her support, generosity, and love. Oma doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were her pride and joy. She would always ask what they were up to and how they did in school. She came to many of their concerts until her health no longer allowed her to.
Our family would like to express our thanks to the Luther Home and all the caregivers who looked after her. A special thanks to Marga and Marianne for their friendship and love to our Mum.
Helen loved her family and cherished her friends and in return was loved and will be forever remembered.
A private family service will be held, and she will be laid to rest with her husband Frank.
Memorial donations may be made to L’Arche Winnipeg, 118 Regent Avenue East, Winnipeg, MB, R2C 0C1.
