Obituary for Helen Irene Mageau (Dinel)
Mageau, Helen Irene [Dinel] – It is with great sadness that the family of Helen Irene Mageau (nee Dinel) announces her sudden passing on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at the Temiskaming Hospital. She was surrounded by her family and their love as she gave in to the influenza and pneumonia that took her life. She was in her 80th year, born June 17, 1938 in Haileybury. She attended Haileybury Public School and graduated from New Liskeard Secondary School and in 1957 she married the love of her life, Alex Mageau. On October 19, 2017 they celebrated 60 years of wonderful marriage. Family was very important to Helen and she was immensely proud of their 3 daughters, their 4 grandchildren and their loving sons-in-law. She was also immensely proud of her community and was always striving to make it a better place to live, instilling in all her children the need to get involved. Helen formed the first Haileybury Rate Payers Association and continued her committment as a Haileybury Town Councillor. She was a member of the Temiskaming Hospital Board and was ahead of her time in thinking that Haileybury and New Liskeard could get along – just build the hospital in the best location and stop the bickering! She was also a member of the Ontario Parole Board, the local Catholic Women’s League and local chapter of the IODE. She was a hard working, passionate and dedicated team member at The Land Titles Office, Wheel Truing Diamond Drilling, and the Office of Probation and Parole at the Haileybury Court House before her retirement in 1989. Helen was a « people person » in the true sense of the word. Helen and Alex spent their retirement years travelling the world and while others would recount everything they did and saw on such travels, Helen would recount all the people she met wherever their travels took them. And boy did she love to dance!
She will be deeply missed by her loving husband Alex, daughters Alexis Mageau, Laurie and son-in-law Michael Wilson, Pam and son-in-law Ian Bell, and grandchildren Brooke and Spencer Wilson and Scott and Logan Bell. Also left to mourn are siblings Betty MacGregor, Eileen Hammerstrom, Jean Wheeler, Ruth Austin, Pat Dinel and Brenda Rutledge as well as many nieces and nephews and good friends. She was predeceased by her parents Pearl and Leo Dinel and siblings Harold, Leonard, Doug, and Linda.
Visitation will be held at Buffam Leveille Funeral Home in Haileybury on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. with a celebration of her life to take place on Wednesday, January 17, 2018, 11:00 am at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church. The family would like to thank Drs Smith, Baron and Corbeil and all the nurses in the Special Care Unit at Temiskaming Hospital for the exceptional care and compassion they gave to Helen in the last days of her life. With that in mind, in lieu of flowers donations to the Temiskaming Hospital Care Close to Home Fundraising Campaign would be gratefully acknowledged.
