Hector Patrick Roach
1942-2018
Hector Patrick Roach, born on April 16th, 1942 in New
Waterford, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully at the Dr. Everett
Chalmers Hospital on January 6th, 2018 surrounded by family.
Close to a decade ago, Frontal Temporal Dementia (FTD) began to slowly
rob our family of the husband, father, grandfather, sibling and friend
who was loved by so many.
Prior to his illness, Hector was an outstanding
athlete. He was inducted into the Nova Scotia Hall of Fame
for his role in winning a national high school basketball title and he
went on to play basketball for UNB. He coached basketball
teams to more than a dozen provincial titles and later donned the
black and white stripes as a referee. Throughout his life, Hector was
an avid outdoorsman. He shared his love and skill for
fishing, canoeing, birding and hiking with his family and hundreds of
others through instruction at UNB, Canoe New Brunswick, Fundy Hiking
Holidays and Backcountry Adventures, a small business which he and his
wife, Nancy, operated for a period of time.
Hector loved to teach. He taught and coached physical
education for 30 years in city schools, the majority of which were
spent at George Street Junior High School. He loved all animals,
especially dogs, and was proud to have his last Labrador retriever
trained as a St John Ambulance therapy dog. Even though FTD
resulted in the loss of his interests, skills and knowledge, the
family takes great comfort in knowing that so much of what he knew
lives on in those he taught.
Hector is survived by his wife of 35 years, Nancy (Estey)
Roach and their children Bill Reynolds (Joanne) and Sarah
Reynolds-Yohe (Charlie); beloved grandchildren Maia Reynolds, Peter
Reynolds, Zachary Leblanc, Sebastien Leblanc, Brady Yohe and Samantha
Yohe; siblings Clarence (Vivian) Roach, Marie (Archie) MacKinnon and
Betty (Chester) Muise. He also loved being an uncle to his
many nieces and nephews. Hector was predeceased by his
parents, Peter and Katie Roach, and his younger brother, Patrick
Roach.
The family would like to thank the many friends and
caregivers who helped bring light to this long journey. In lieu of
flowers, those who wish may make a donation to the Fredericton
Community Foundation or a charity of their choice.
Please join us for a celebration of Hector’s life
taking place on Friday, January 12th, 2018 from 4-6 pm at Kingswood
Lodge.
