Heather was born January 19th, 1955 in Barrhead Alberta to Ursula and Walter (Slim) Martin. The family recollected due to their fathers work as a policeman. Heather lived in a few Alberta communities, after Barrhead the family moved to Leduc, Drayton Valley eventually settling in Edson, 1959. In 1967, the family moved to the country permanently purchasing the farm in 1961. Heather was actively involved with 4-H and the wellness of animals from an early age. Spending most of her time at the farm w0here she developed her love for horses. She spent most of her time ridding, training and tending to her horses as well as other livestock.
Heather graduated from Edson High School in 1973. In 1974, she spent the year working for an equestrienne ranch, where she competed in jumping and dressage. She was accepted to Augustana Lutheran College. She spent two years at Augustana, studying, competing on the Vikings basketball team, fencing and canoeing.
She was accepted to the University of Saskatoon (U. Of S.) and graduated with her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in 1980. She was an active student and won awards at the U. Of S. for her arm wrestling. Heather worked at a few Veterinary practices located in Edmonton, Drayton Valley and Acme.
After graduating from University, Heather and her mother went to the United Kingdom and Europe. She hiked the Scottish Highlands, a 20 km hike in a day. Hiking the Highlands was full of challenging terrain it was surprising to the locals!
She met Henry in 1981 and they were married in 1982 in Edson, Alberta. Henry and Heather welcomed their first child in 1983, then their second in 1984 and their third daughter in 1986. During this time, Heather also started her own veterinary practice. Eventually, she moved her mobile practice to a permanent location on the farm where Heather and Henry lived, worked and raised their three children. Heather was recognised by her peers for her professional accomplishments specifically her technique used to mitigate toxicology effects. Heather balanced her professional practice and her family until her illness stole her ability to do so.
Heather was a deeply spiritual person and chose to convert to Catholicism in 1993. Her faith supported her and inspired her. It was a part of her, a value that she kept beyond the limitation of her illness. Religion was as important to her as was her family and the welfare of animals.
