Hans was born in a small village in Eastern Germany. He was the oldest of five children and was predeceased by his mother, father, all four younger siblings as well as his grandson Hayden. He came to Canada in 1951 and worked at the Bluebell Mine in Riondel, B.C. and while working there he joined the Mine Rescue Team and obtained a Mine Rescue Certificate from the B.C. Department of Mines. He married Anneliese Spreemann in 1954 and moved to Nelson in 1965 with his family. He attended the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon and received a diploma in Hospital Administration. He became the administrator of Willowhaven Private Hospital in 1967. Then in 1977 he and his wife moved to Vancouver where Hans assumed the responsibility of Accountant and Business Manager of the George Pearson Hospital in Vancouver. In 1982, Hans became the Administrator of the Kiwanis Village Care Home in Gibsons. He also was a founding charter member of the Canadian College of Health Service Executives and a member of the B.C. Care Administrators Association. He retired in 1988. Hans had been a member of the Masonic Lodge – Kaso Lodge No. 25 and Chapter No. 5 in Nelson, B.C. Hans had been pre-deceased by his wife Anneliese in 2010. He was diagnosed with colon cancer in Nov. 2007 and has been fighting this cancer every since. He loved the Sunshine Coast and the outdoors, walking, hiking and cross country skiing. He leaves his son, Kirk (Karin) and his daughter Chrissy (Stewart), six grandchildren Matthew, Jessica, Samantha, Meagan and Caitlin and two great-grandchildren Cole and Jude.
A big thank you to Dr. A. Stinson and Dr. R. Lehman for looking after Hans in his years trying to fight cancer and to all the nurses and care aides at Sechelt Hospital and Shornecliffe Hospice.
