Gwendolyn Mary Atkinson
Gwendolyn M.
Atkinson, 92, of K. E. Spencer Memorial Home and formerly of Wendell
St., Riverview, passed away peacefully at The Moncton Hospital with
her family at her side on Sunday, July 22, 2018. Born in Lower
Coverdale, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Gladys
(Steeves) Steeves.
Gwen grew up
in a large family on a farm in Lower Coverdale, N.B. She
married her beloved Bob in 1946. They built their home in
Riverview where they raised their three sons. In her early
years of marriage, she worked for T. Eaton Company, Unemployment
Insurance, Treasury Office and later for the Moncton School
Board.
Gwen had an
active life including worshipping at Gunningsville Baptist Church
where she was part of the « Happy Gang », a leader in the
Pioneer Girls, a Sunday School Teacher, a teller, nursery worker and a
member of the Women’s Missionary Society. She
loved playing games including bridge, scrabble and cribbage. She
bowled with the Riverview Seniors Bowling League, enjoyed knitting,
reading, fishing, bird watching, poetry and travelling. She
was an avid Royal watcher as
well.
For years
she and Bob owned a family cottage at Ann’s Acres, where
friends and family would gather for games, music and fun.
She loved picking berries, gardening, and making jams and pickles,
while at the cottage.
Gwen and Bob
enjoyed volunteering in the community. They volunteered for
Albert County Aide and delivered food parcels at Christmas.
She collected for the Canadian Cancer Society and knit hundreds of
pairs of mittens to put on the mitten tree at
church.
Her sons
loved and respected her, and her grandchildren adored her.
She was a lovely, caring woman and she will be lovingly
remembered.
Gwen will be
sadly missed by her sons, Robin (Pauline), David (Anne) and Thomas;
grandchildren, Paige, Jesse (Kayla), Drew (Samantha), Wyatt and Brett;
great grandchildren, Finn and Ivy; sister, Lowell Gourley and brother,
Joseph Steeves, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family
members.
In addition
to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Robert Atkinson
(2004) and brothers, Bud, Gerad, Rudyard and Charles; sisters, Vivian
Stainforth and Roberta Murray.
Special
thanks to Sheela Sealy for over 15 years of dedicated caregiving while
Mum was at home and to close friends Roscoe and Faith
McAleese.
A Service to
celebrate and honour Gwen’s life will be held from
Gunningsville Baptist Church, 160 Old Coach Road, Riverview, on
Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at 11:00 am with Rev. Blair Holden
officiating. Reception following the service. Interment will be in
Wilmot Cemetery, Lower
Coverdale.
In lieu of
flowers, donations to Gunningsville Baptist Church would be
appreciated. Online condolences for the family may be shared
