In Loving Memory of
Gertrude (Gertie) Margaret Law was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on August 2, 1927.
She was the second of three children for Adolph and Matilda Law. Adolph was a carpenter and Matilda was a homemaker.
Mom was a great helper for her Dad by doing many hours of work building their house at 845 Winnipeg Ave. She also took time to play the piano and was of course involved in her German Lutheran catechism. Mom had two brothers. Harold was the older and would train to become a CNR trainman.
Herbert was seven years her junior and as such Mom would help Herb with love and financial support as a youngster. Mom also developed some lifelong friendships with Evelyn and Lillian Wensel of Winnipeg.
During this time, the wedding of her cousin Herb Bessel introduced her to the love of her life, Lyle Bligh. Quickly inseparable, they were married on October 6, 1950 in Winnipeg.
Mom and Dad soon moved back to Saskatchewan. There, Gertie and Lyle had five children between the years of 1954 to 1962: Sharon, Russell, Roderick, Gordon and Linda. During this time, the family resided in the Hazel Cliffe and Spy Hill area. In the early 1960’s, Dad would be presented the opportunity of training to be a meteorological technician.
In 1962, Mom followed Dad with much trepidation to Norman Wells, NWT. But soon with new friends the Stralaks, Mom became happy and content. All this time Mom was developing into a wonderful baker and cook.
In 1968, the family returned to farming. They bought the Leo Bessel farm in the Langenburg area and worked hard to provide for their family. Mom’s life on the farm was hard but fulfilling. Along with helping to do the regular chores, Mom also planted a huge garden, cooked, cleaned and generally took care of the family.
Another change in the early 1990’s, and circumstance took Mom and Dad from the farm. In the ensuing years they lived in numerous communities in Saskatchewan including Fleming, Neudorf and Cabri. They settled in Craik in 1994. There, in their later years, with Mom’s love of cooking and Dad’s entrepreneurial spirit, they created a business to sell baked goods at the Moose Jaw farmer’s market. During that time their unwavering Christian faith guided them and their children and grandchildren’s lives through the illness of a son (Russell) and the death of a daughter (Sharon) and grandchild (Kaitlin).
Dad fell ill in 2012, residing in Moose Jaw for a few months before being placed closer to home in the Craik Health Centre. Mom regularly visited him, bringing her love and baking. Dad passed away at the Craik Health Centre on February 2, 2016 at the age of 88 years. Mom continued to live alone in their house in Craik until declining health in 2017 when she moved in with her daughter Linda. This proved to be a special gift of time and companionship for both. In late 2017 Mom took ill with a heart issue, then in early 2018 she had a fall and broke her hip. However, Mom’s final struggle with numerous ailments was too great and after a 10 day vigil of family she joined Lyle, Sharon, Barry, Kaitlin, and others in the afterlife. Mom is survived by one brother Herb from Winnipeg; her sister in law Adela from Langenburg; four children and eight grandchildren.
A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held in the Langenburg United Church, Langenburg, SK on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with interment to follow at the Gerald Cemetery.
Arrangements entrusted to Regina Funeral Home and Cemetery (306) 789-8850.
