Death Notice
YOUNG, Gary Gerrard – Died as he lived; on his own terms. Our fun loving, wise cracking, soft spoken family member died of lung cancer, October 2nd, 2018 at Mount Hope Centre for Long Term Care, at the age of 61. He was surrounded by the love of his family and friends during his whole journey.
Gary was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Shirley (Gerrard) Young. He leaves behind his brother Jim (Carol) Young and sister Kathy (Dan) Keefe. Gary will be missed by his nephew Dave (Delia) Keefe, nieces Kaitlin Keefe (Colin Rae) and Christine Stowe and great nephew Caden Stowe. He is fondly remembered by his Uncle Roderick (Aileen) Young, Aunt Marlene (Roy) West, his many cousins and friends.
Gary was born in London, Ontario on January 6, 1957. The family moved frequently as his father was relocated by Bell. Gary graduated high school in Toronto, working several jobs, driving truck, until he was struck with Leber’s disease, rendering him legally blind. He then helped deliver furniture and worked in the warehouse at The Sofa Gallery, now Sutherland’s Furniture in London, where he developed life-long friendships. He disliked winter and loved to travel, so he headed for the heat and sunshine during most years…Jamaica, Mexico, Cuba, Panama and St. Martens. Gary loved to talk to anyone and everyone, so guests and staff welcomed him equally.
The family would like to extend their gratitude for the kind care received at Mount Hope, especially the nurses, psw’s, cleaning staff and food servers of The Royal Hunt Second Floor. They were wonderful and through the Wishing Well program, granted Gary his last wish which was to see Rod Stewart in concert. We will never forget their kindness and support. It is a wonderful program.
Visitors will be received on Tuesday, October 9th from 6 to 9 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James St. at Richmond. Gary was a huge fan of Rod Stewart, NASCAR and Blue Jays Baseball so please come casually dressed in your favourite plaid or sports outfit. Interment will be Wednesday, October 10th at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Cemetery, Thamesford with a small service at the graveside. Refreshments to follow in London at the Young residence.
Donations may be made to the St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation for the Wishing Well Program at Mount Hope, or to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (London Chapter) or to a charity of your choice.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Gary Young 2018.
