Evelyn Caroline Sapinsky

(November 6, 1919 – July 20, 2018)
Born in Hallonquist, Saskatchewan, Evelyn Berteig was the second of five children born to John and Anna Berteig. Evelyn grew up on the Berteig family farm in Saskatchewan, and took Normal school in Swift Current. She married Art Grinder in 1940 and they had three children – Jim, Judy, and Dan. The family moved to Kelowna in 1949 where Art built them a lovely home on the lake. In 1957 they moved to Chilliwack where Evelyn worked as a nurse’s aide before opening a private kindergarten in her home. After the sudden death of her husband in 1962, she earned a teaching certificate at UBC and taught school for many years. Evelyn married Emil Sapinsky in 1968 and they lived and worked in High River and Blairmore Alberta until they retired in Summerland, and later in Kelowna. In retirement, Evelyn found pleasure in travelling adventures, painting, playing bridge or scrabble, and dancing. She adored her grand-children and kept albums and scrap-books filled with memories. Her last few years were spent at Piccadilly Care Centre, Salmon Arm. Evelyn was predeceased by husband Art Grinder, daughter Judy Stuckle, husband Emil Sapinsky, son Jim Grinder, brothers Ben and James Berteig, and sister Anita Crick. She leaves to mourn her son Dan (Bonnie), step-children Thelma Traub, Walter (Earla) Sapinsky, Carl (Donna) Sapinsky, and Esther (Ron) Irwin, sister Beatrice Parker, daughter-in-law Dena Grinder, brother-in-law Laurie Crick, brother-in-law Lyle Stuckle, seven grand-children, and fourteen great grand-children. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Samaritan’s Purse Bible Society. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, July 30, 2018 at 11:30 am at First Memorial Funeral Services, 1211 Sutherland Avenue, Kelowna, BC. Interment will follow at the Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery, Kelowna, BC.
