Obituary for Mr. Edwin « James » Hawley
It is with sadness that the family of Edwin James “Jim” Hawley announces his sudden passing. Jim passed away peacefully at Sunset Manor on Tuesday, January 9th, 2018 in his 93rd year. He was the beloved husband and loving companion of Elaine who predeceased him in 2016 after 69 wonderful years of marriage. He will be greatly missed by his daughter Janet and her husband Bruce Gillham. He was the proud Grandpa of Jason and his wife Melanie and Jonathan and his wife Stacey and he thoroughly enjoyed his great grandchildren Jacob, Jasper, Allison, Willow and Emily. Jim was predeceased by his brothers David and Bob and he is remembered by his sisters in law Pam and Marilyn and by his niece and nephews. Jim, the eldest son of Edward Hawley and Janet (Wylie) Hawley, was born in Toronto on June 20, 1925. After graduating from Vaughan Road Collegiate he joined the Army Corps of Engineers, then following the war he worked in infrastructure design for the City of Toronto and the Ontario Department of Highways. Following his retirement he and Elaine pursued their love of the outdoors, first in Smithers BC, then in Collingwood where they enjoyed many years of alpine and nordic skiing, hiking, canoeing and fishing. Jim continued to alpine ski until he was 85, nordic ski until he was 88, and he hiked on the Bruce Trail with four generations of the family on his 90th birthday. Jim and Elaine enjoyed extensive world travels, and Jim, an avid reader and student of history and archeology, enjoyed visiting ancient historical sites. Their travels included taking the family on remote canoe trips and ski trips to the mountains, adventures that made a lasting impression on the family. Jim expressed his creative, artistic side through painting, furniture building and listening to classical music. Jim will be fondly remembered by family and all who knew him as a kind and gentle soul with a smile that could light up a room. Jim spent the past year and a half at Sunset Manor. We thank the staff for the wonderful care he received and for their efforts in keeping him engaged and interested in life. Following Jim’s wishes, cremation has taken place and the family will hold a private celebration of life.
