Send Sympathy Card
It is with heavy hearts that we announce that peacefully, on Monday, December 17, 2018, Earl Mike Asmundson passed away at Vita Hospital after a two and a half year battle with lung cancer.
Earl, also known to many as “Joe”, was a loving husband, a proud father and grandfather, a loyal brother, a favourite uncle to his many nieces and nephews, and a close friend to so many. Earl was a friendly, kind, honest, hard-working man who had a positive impact on everyone he met. He loved his family, Piney, farming, carpentry and hunting. Earl made friends easily, striking up conversations and finding things in common, and also loved to tease and joke around. Earl was always willing to lend a hand, and wouldn’t hesitate to put others before himself. It was because of all of these admirable qualities that Earl was loved by so many.
Earl was born in Vita, Manitoba on July 24, 1940 to Carl and Anna Asmundson, the 8th child in a family of 10 children. Earl grew up in Piney, Manitoba, where he went to school, had his first few jobs, and met his wife, Mavis, whom he married in 1962. Earl and Mavis lived in Winnipeg for the first 4 years of their marriage, but the ‘gravitational pull’ of Piney was too great, and in 1966, with their first child, Tim, in tow, they moved back to Earl’s beloved Piney, where they added two more sons to their family and spent the rest of their life. Earl worked hard to provide for his family, including jobs in the building trades, farming, and for the Department of Highways and Transportation, where he spent 26 years. Earl retired in 1999 and enjoyed woodworking in his retirement years, spending countless hours in his workshop crafting all kinds of pieces that are enjoyed by many people throughout the province.
Earl was predeceased by his parents (Carl and Anna), two brothers (Calvin and Edward), two sisters (Lillian and Aldis), and two infant sons (Jonathon and Robert).
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 56 years, Mavis, his sons, Tim (Lesley), Ron (Christine) and Paul (Christa), his #1 granddaughter (Bethany), and three grandsons (Gunnar, Axel and Magnus), as well as his brother, sisters, in-laws, and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at Vita Hospital for their care and compassion over Earl’s final days. In addition, heartfelt gratitude goes out to all of the family and friends of Earl who would stop in for a visit, which made Earl’s battle more bearable and brought joy and happiness to him. A special thank-you to Lyle & Fred and Carol & Andy for all of their love and support for Earl and Mavis over the course of Earl’s fight.
A celebration of Earl’s life will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Piney Community Church or Piney Cemetery.
