Dwight Small
Dwight Small passed away peacefully at the Gull Lake nursing home on Wednesday April 18th. Dwight was born on the farm in Banks District on April 20, 1922. He attended Banks School until grade nine and then started working on the farm full time. He joined the army in the fall of 1942 and took his basic training in Maple Creek. He was then sent to Camp Borden for Driver Mechanic training. Dwight was sent to England in 1943 and spent nearly a year in drills and Artillery training. In July 1944, due to the losses after D-day he was transferred to Infantry. He took his Infantry training and was sent to Belgium to join the Regina Rifles in December. He spent the next six and a half months moving through Belgium and Holland and into Germany. He returned to Canada and arrived in Regina on New Years Eve. On October 23, 1947 he married Ruth Sells of Gull Lake. He worked for Revelstoke Lumber for awhile and then went to Wawota where he ran a lumber yard before going into carpentry full time. In 1965 he moved to Tantalon and worked for three years on a new potash mine. In 1969 he went to Winnipeg for ten years and then moved back to Gull Lake. He retired in 1990. He was a long time Legion member and went to all the Regina Rifle reunions for the last 35 years. He enjoyed going to coffee row, playing cards and watching Canadian football. He was predeceased by his wife Ruth in 2008. Dwight was the last of his generation in the Small and Sells family. He will be missed by his children, Sandra(Allan), Danny(Allana), Lavern(Wayne)and Susan; grandchildren Michel, Steven, Jason and Danita-Marie; four great grandsons and eight great granddaughters. A big thank you to Dr. Clare and all the staff at the nursing home. A remembrance service will be held July 2, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Gull Lake Community Cemetery with a lunch at the Elks Hall to follow. Warren’s Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
