Obituary for Dr. Michael Bottomley
Dr. Michael George Bottomley passed away suddenly on Jan. 8, 2018. Born in Sheffield, England on Jan. 31, 1940, he graduated with a medical degree from the University of Liverpool in 1962 before emigrating to St. John’s, Newfoundland to complete his internship. It was there that he met Marjorie Butler, and together they raised a family of four children living in Halifax, Toronto, Boston, and Ottawa where he received a PhD in Physiology from the University of Ottawa and became a distinguished General and Vascular Surgeon in Newmarket, Ont. His love for Newfoundland and the ocean eventually lured him back where he most recently worked as an emergency room physician and began his retirement.
A caring and knowledgeable surgeon, Dad was known for his wry sense of humour, his soft demeanor, his competitiveness, his passion for justice, and a tendency to take the roads less travelled. He would never turn down the opportunity to join in a sport or a game, including completing a marathon on a challenge. He had a love of music spending hours playing the piano, guitar, or accordion. He enjoyed traveling, reading, writing and would often speak quotes in a variety of languages. Dad’s real passions were poetry, philosophy, sailing and the ocean. He found the most beauty in nature and the simple things in life.
Dad’s life lessons, values, love, and humour will be fondly remembered by his four children Stephen (Jeanmarie Papelian), Carol, Janet (Marty Dubourcq), and Brenda (Gerry Greaves); grandchildren: Grace & Luke Bottomley, Rachel, Lauren, & Jack Kensit, Helena Dubourcq, Jet & Kai Greaves; his close friend Nathalie Proulx; his sister Judith Dantlo and nephews (Marc, Richard, & Nicolas) of France. Predeceased by parents Mr. George Henry & Phyllis Mary Bottomley of England, and former wife Marjorie Bottomley.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Barrett’s Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place. Funeral services, reception, and burial will be held in Newfoundland and announced at a later date. Friends are welcome. If desired, please consider supporting cardiovascular disease research by donating to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or by helping someone in need on Dad’s behalf.
