OBITUARY
Dorothy Evelyn Furhman
November 7, 1924 – October 13, 2018
In loving memory of Dorothy (Dot) passed away peacefully just a few weeks shy of her 94th birthday, with her son at her side and family present. Dot was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and grew up a strong farm girl in Oak Bank, MB. She is predeceased by her loving parents, Daniel and Olga Smith, her sister, Louise (Edmund) Kill, her Stepfather, Bill Tomasky and husbands, Tudor Davies and Lorne Furhman. Dorothy is survived and will be held in loving memory by her only son Martin (Kathleen) Davies and two beautiful grandchildren, Lindsay and Gavin Davies. She was a wonderful aunt to Dorothy and Colleen Kill.
In her youth Dot was a dead-eye shooter and on the farm, no magpie was safe! She was a lifelong athlete, playing slow pitch softball in Winnipeg, and gravitating to biking, golf and tennis later in life. With her sharp mind she was a competitive bridge and game player. Dot was also an avid world traveler and adventurer throughout her life.
Dorothy had a teaching career that spanned over 20 years beginning after Normal School. She then went on to proudly achieve her B.Ed at the age of 50. In 1978 she changed careers to be a very successful real estate agent in both Calgary and Kelowna. Throughout her life she was known for her strong will which extended into her activism and political involvement. She is well known by the Kelowna Courier for her numerous “letters to the editor”, many of which were published and made their way to public officials. She was equally known for her many “thank you notes” which she gave to those for good service or who deserved to be noticed. Dot brought smiles and laughter to many with her involvement in drama and countless social events. In the last years of her life she entertained countless people – from policemen sitting at Tim Horton’s to the nurses and doctors at Kelowna General Hospital with her famous “naughty joke”.
We send a special thanks to the nurses and doctors of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) of British Columbia who gave Dorothy her final wishes and brought peace to her and her family.
Please join the family in the celebration of Dorothy’s life at 10 am, on Tuesday, October, 16, 2018, at the First Memorial Funeral Services, 1211 Sutherland Ave. in Kelowna.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the charity of one’s choice.
