David Jones QC LLB 1925 2018

He died peacefully at Lakeridge in Oshawa.Much loved father of Sarah & Andrew and uncle of Martha Denning, Miriam McDermott and Stan Jones; fond grandfather of Kathleen and Robert Jones and Robert, Thomas and James Kenny, Patrick Beatty and Rosalind and Christian Breen. He was predeceased by his beloved wives Evelyn Hyndman and Kathleen (Kay) Barry, his brother Stanley.David was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Stanley N.and Miriam nee Haney Jones. He was educated at Ravenscourt School,
The University of Manitoba Law School and Cambridge University, England.David would want you to know that his legal career as a barrister and solicitor, which began in 1951 in Winnipeg, was initially in the field of general commercial law.But in time, he became a specialist in the field of administrative and transportation law, appearing with increasing frequency on behalf of clients before federal and provincial regulatory boards,
commissions and tribunals concerned with operations and freight rates of railways and with licensing and operations of provincial truck lines.Besides his law practice, He was for many years a member of the Council of the Manitoba Bar Association and the Manitoba Council of the Canadian Bar Association. He served a term as Editor of The Manitoba Bar News. He was also honorary solicitor for the Salvation Army and member of its Winnipeg Advisory Board.
Between 1952 and 1966,David was an adjunct lecturer at the University of Manitoba Law School, teaching the Law of Tort and Administrative Law.
When Parliament enacted the National Transportation Act in 1967, creating the Canadian Transport Commission, David was invited by the federal government to become a member of the Commission and Chairman of its railway tribunal. The Act created a new regulatory framework for Canadas railway industry and required the Commission to ensure that railways were operated safely, to investigate when they were not and to prescribe the necessary corrective action. He served two 10 year terms at the Commission, retiring in 1987.Davids children would want you to know he was an enthusiast for and enjoyer of (in no particular order) Charles Dickens, Sherlock Holmes, Winston Churchill, Pierre Trudeau, Lester Pearson, Tommy Douglas, Gilbert and Sullivan, Laurel and Hardy, John Cleese (especially in Fawlty Towers), Monty Python, Buster Keaton, Benny Goodman, Stanley Holloway, border terriers, lemon meringue and pumpkin pie, all things chocolate and any occasion where ice cream could be served. He was always in favour of the meticulous investigation and punishment of chicanery, the thorough defeat of despots, and fairness.
He was a devoted and loyal father and uncle who encouraged his children to be whatever they wanted to be as long as they gave it their all; and supported them throughout. He will be missed.
Donations in Davids memory to The Salvation Army or The Shepherds of Good Hope in Ottawa would be welcome. The family wishes to thank the staff at Lakeridge Hospital who looked after David with kindness and compassion. Cremation has taken place.
