David Harold Campbell
David Harold Campbell, 84 years old, who lived at West Country Hearth in Villenenuve, AB, died on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at Misericordia Community Hospital in Edmonton, AB. Dave died in his sleep after breaking his hip in a fall in his shower on Thursday September 6, 2018.
Dave was born on March 16, 1934 and grew up on a farm on Winterburn road in Edmonton, AB. He was the son of William and Mildred Campbell and was the beloved brother of Delilah Rogers, Maureen Moon, William Campbell, Ethel Leach, Peggy McKenzie, Fay Tevendale, Don Campbell, Betty Bell, Robert Campbell, Holly Pickle and Craig Campbell.
After being educated as a youth in a one-room schoolhouse, Dave went to trade school and studied commercial and industrial electrical wiring. After his apprenticeship, he worked on the Distant Early Warning Line in the Canadian and American Arctic during the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. After returning from the arctic he came back to the Edmonton area and started his own business in Mayerthorpe, AB. In the early 1970’s, he traveled east and settled in Toronto where he worked as an electrician in a variety of industries, including, meat processing, beverage bottling and airport Automation. He was responsible for automating the Glycol Delivery systems at both the Pearson Airport in Toronto and Vancouver International Airport.
In 1992 he moved from Toronto to Rochester, NY with his friend Tom O’Brien where he continued working as an industrial electrician while also restoring historical homes using his various skills as a carpenter, Plumber, electrician and overall handyman. In 1998 he moved to Shawnee, OK with Tom and two years later the moved to Chicago, IL where he continued restoring historical properties as a profession. He retired while living in Chicago in 2007. He returned to Edmonton in 2013 and eventually took up residence at West Country Hearth after being diagnosed with dementia.
Dave was an avid computer user, regularly communicating by email with family and striking up new friendships and associations online. He is remembered by many friends and family members for being a gentle, kind quiet and available soul.
Dave is survived by his siblings: Ethel Leach, Peggy McKenzie, Fay Tevendale, Don Campbell, Robert Campbell, Holly Pickle and Craig Campbell as well as many nephews, nieces, cousins, and in-laws – too many to fit comfortably into concise obituary. He’s also survived by his friend Tom O’Brien.
As we remember Dave it is also fitting to remember his siblings who have gone before him: Delilah Rogers, Maureen Moon, William Campbell, and Betty Bell.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Evergreen Funeral Home at 16204 Fort Road, Edmonton, (access off 153 Avenue only)
Dave requested that NO flowers be sent for the service. In lieu of flowers donations should be sent to West County Hearth, 26504 Secondary Highway 633, Sturgeon County, AB T8N 1R9.
