Craig’s Obituary
DRUMHEAD – Howard Craig Gallant, 62, Drumhead, passed away suddenly, Monday, November 5, 2018 after beginning his evening shift.
Born in New Glasgow, he was the son of the late George and Marjorie Jean (Langley) Gallant. Craig was employed with Sentry Security at Anaconda Mining Company, Goldboro and Mersy Seafoods, Stormont (where he first started work as a teenager). He was a member of St. Matthew’s United Church, Halifax. Craig was very proud of his Acadian heritage, which he enjoyed researching.
He was a lifelong learner, garnering information from interest in others and all things encountered. Craig was fortunate to have enjoyed various unique jobs throughout his life. He worked on construction, building new homes and community buildings; transported medical personnel, specimens and organs between hospitals in HRM; drove long haul trucks, travelling throughout continental U.S. and Canada; drove cabs in HRM and New Glasgow, and provided security services for private companies and organizations at commercial, industrial and large construction projects. He was one of the last lighthouse keepers in Eastern Nova Scotia. Craig co-authored and co-photographed a book on eco-tourism, kayaking and hiking trails in Guysborough County. He managed the wharf and marina and operated his own kayak rental and tour company in Guysborough. Craig was a research assistant on a thesis project studying the migration of Black Empire Loyalists to Nova Scotia.
Craig was a “sponge” for absorbing knowledge. He was well-known for his humour, outlook on life and ability to entertain. He was a great story teller, having the ability to make the mundane special. Family was very high priority; being present for and greatly influencing the lives of his nieces and nephews. Craig owned, raised and showed dogs, and was seldom without a canine companion by his side, which for the past three years was his Standard poodle, Bella. From the age of fourteen until his death, he was a motorcycle enthusiast. Craig enjoyed science fiction and horror stories. He and Susan enjoyed travelling, camping, and touring on his side by side.
He was involved in his community; serving on the board of directors for Isaac’s Harbour Medical Centre as coordinator for the local community gym, and Seal Harbour Cemetery Association, where he was caretaker for several years.
Surviving are his wife and best friend of 41 years, Susan (Goodwin) Gallant; sister, Mildred “Sue” (Ronald) Romaine, Petawawa, Ont.; brother, Leo (Wendy) Gallant, Harbourville; sisters-in-law, Laurel Goodwin (Bernie MacDonald), New Glasgow; Rhona (Ken) Hubley, Greenhill; Janet Goodwin, Riverton; brothers-in-law, Andy (Sandi Malloy), MacLellans Brook; Dave (Trina) and Peter (Lori), New Glasgow; Mike (Alisha), Cold Lake, Alta.; many nieces and nephews; special cousin and lifelong friend, Christine Wilson Weston, Halifax; best friend since childhood, Bert Fitzmorris, Lake Echo; many cousins and close friends.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sister-in-law, Melody Board; father and mother-in-law, Grace and John Goodwin; several aunts and uncles.
In keeping with Craig’s wishes, his family will celebrate his life privately.
Donations may be made in Craig’s memory to Seal Harbour Cemetery Association or Isaac’s Harbour Medical Centre.
