Obituary of Clayton Strickland
With his children and daughter-in-law at his bedside Clayton (Clay) John Strickland passed away at Welland General Hospital on Thursday December 20th, 2018. Clay fought a brave, dignified, battle against a number of overwhelming health conditions. The family is deeply grateful for the efforts, often above and beyond, of the doctors, nurses and entire team at the Welland General 3rd floor ICU.
Born in 1939, Clay is well known in the Niagara Region as an A&P Store Manager, a Fonthill Lion, a competitive card player and an active member at Lookout Point Country Club for over 50 years. Clay always had a joke ready to tell, a helping hand to extend, so he made friends easily and kept them for life. Clay moved to Niagara in the late 1950s from Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. He is predeceased by his mother Mabel and his father Adolphus. Clay’s sister Joan MacIntosh lives in Glace Bay with her husband Johnny. Clay came to Niagara with his best bud Uncle Ross (Herridge) and stayed with Aunties in St Catharines and Galt, who supervised his arrival and kept him on the straight and narrow, so the story goes. Throughout his life Clay stayed in touch with everyone and he was loved and cared for by a wonderful extended family, who he felt the same way about.
Above all Clay was a dedicated, loving and constant family man. Father to Joel, Carla (Mark) and Calvin (Cheryl). Grandfather to Levi, Arabella and Cole. Each benefitted from « pops » example of hard work and genuine concern for others.
Clay met the love of his life Fey Liani (Furney) at the Dominion Store in Thorold, Ontario. Fey and Clay got married in June 1961 and built a life together over 52 years, interrupted when Fey passed in 2013. They shared a wonderful life full of great times and adventurous vacations and were blessed by the love of dear friends, like Walt and Carol Lastewka, the Furney brothers and their wives, and so many, many more. Over the years the card games became epic and the characters were better than television. Clay missed Fey with his whole heart every day of the past 5 years and his family is glad that they are reunited in paradise.
