Chitrawatia « Aunty Tara » Dabee
September 28, 1924 – November 8, 2018
Chitrawatia Dabee also known as Tara, passed away peacefully on November 8th, 2018 at the age of 94 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Tara, the eldest of eleven children, was born on September 28, 1924 in Mahaica, Guyana, to Sancharie and Sadhu Narine of Victoria Village. Tara attended Victoria Roman Catholic School and was an excellent student. In 1939, she married Premraj Dabee of Vigilance and together they were blessed with eleven children.
Tara always had a heart for helping others. Apart from raising her children with her husband in Vigilance, she was a community leader, humanitarian, seamstress, landlord, farmer, Hindi teacher, and midwife. She helped women to set up a microfinancing system which helped many families to acquire their own homes and pay for their children’s education. As a seamstress, she crafted numerous wedding dresses and taught young women sewing. She was deeply religious, and an ardent volunteer at the Annandale Aryan Samaj Mandir as a Hindi religious instructor. Tara was a formidable yet loving woman who rented one of her two houses, to families for only a nominal rental fee. Through her exemplary acts of kindness and compassion, most of these tenants became part of her family and lovingly referred to her as Ma, Mama, Agee, or Auntie Tara.
Tara was a brave and courageous woman, but also a loving nurturer to her children. She was fortunate to have had a learned and supportive husband, Premraj, who recognized her leadership qualities early in their marriage. While being a dedicated community leader and volunteer, she was always there for her children, ensuring they received an excellent upbringing which included a good education, strong work ethic and the importance of social justice.
In 1980, she and two of her youngest children immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba to join two of her sons. She quickly developed many new friendships, mostly through her role as a member and director at the Manitoba Hindu Senior Centre, where she was also a mentor to numerous young people. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed travelling; mostly with her children.
Her family was a great source of happiness and pride. She always beamed with joy when talking about her children and extended family and enjoyed spending time with them. She was happiest when surrounded by family, especially at the large family gatherings in Winnipeg. At these gatherings, she made everyone laugh but always reminded them of the importance of education, financial responsibility, and strong moral ethics. All of her years in Winnipeg, she was blessed to have lived with her children.
Tara was predeceased by her husband Premraj, sons Bohan Paul, Arya and Krishnachand, daughter-in-law Ramwattie, sons-in-law Dwarka and Jai, brothers Patrick, Sunna, and Harry and sisters Subadra and Golin.
She is survived and greatly missed by her children, Adaipaul, Gargeena, Derek (Sandy), Vedo (Zamier), Sangameeta, Martin (Linda), Bheesham and Amrita, 21 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 1 sister, 3 brothers, daughter-in- law (Bernice), and many cherished nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Kelly-Jean Surber for her tender care and support of Tara during the past four years.
The wake for Tara will be held on Friday, November 16, 2018 at 6:30 pm at the Manitoba Hindu Dharmik Sabha, 240 Manitoba Ave, Winnipeg (204-586-9950).
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 17, at 2:00 pm at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard, Winnipeg, followed by a reception.
In lieu of flowers, Tara requested that you may make donations to a charity of your choice.
