Charles D. Zwicker
1927-2018
ZWICKER, Charles David. Age 90, Chester Basin, formally of Western
Shore.
It is with heavy hearts the family of Charlie Zwicker announce his
passing on March 30, 2018.
His final wishes were to remain home at Heart to Heart Manor in
Chester Basin surrounded by his loving and devoted family.
He was the oldest son of the late Willoughby & Alice (Vaughan)
Zwicker ( Western Shore) and was raised by grandparents, Arnold &
Annie Vaughan.
During the Second World War, at an early age, he sailed with the
Canadian Merchant Navy attached to the Norwegian vessel, Polarbjorn.
In later years he worked in the construction industry mixing mortar
for bricklayers on various job sites in Halifax.
He was a loyal friend to many and a character, once met, was never
forgotten. He was a very sociable person and everyone was always
welcome in his home. His cure for every ailment was “a good
drink of rum!”. He had friends of all ages and could be found
socializing with them at the local Legion and Tavern. He enjoyed
spending time with his great-grandsons, Jayden & Riley, sharing
stories and playing checkers. He truly was a legend!
Charlie is survived by daughter, Shelley Zwicker-Riles, Bridgewater;
granddaughter, Sheryl Beaumier, Western Shore; treasured
great-grandsons, Jayden (“Jaggy”) and Riley (“Little
Sackie Hanson”) Beaumier (names given by their “B”);
sister, Sharon Lohnes and brother, Doug (Donna) Zwicker of Western
Shore; uncle, David (Cecelia) Vaughan of Halifax; many nieces and
nephews. Predeceased by wife, Nora (Adams); infant son, Christopher;
brother, Paul; sisters, Esther (Phil) Wylie and June (Clarence) Dorey;
son-in-law, Gordon Riles.
When he was no longer able to live independently, he moved to Heart to
Heart Manor where he enjoyed the last seven years. He and the staff
had a unique and loving relationship; they enjoyed many hours of fun,
laughter and joking, as he was well-known for.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mahone Funeral Home
(www.mahonefuneral.ca) (902)-624-8241.
Cremation has taken place. A service and reception will be held at the
Royal Canadian Legion, Harding Branch 144, Western Shore on Saturday,
April 7, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with committal of his ashes at Western
Shore Cemetery following the reception.
By request, family flowers only; memorial donations may be made to the
IWK Foundation.
The family would like to thank Lynn Key and her staff for their
dedicated and outstanding care, Dr. Dobek, Dr. McNally, VON and two
special nieces, Wanda Mosher and Pam Myra.
As Charlie would say, « Wasn’t that a party! »
