Obituary Overview
Cecelia Frances Martin
Martin (Cornelius), Cecelia Frances “Shirley”, age 79, of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on January 12, 2018 in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII.
Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Pearl (Yonge) and Joseph Cornelius.
Shirley was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was proud of her role as matriarch of the family. As a homemaker, a wife, and a mother, she was strong, capable and tireless, always striving to make things better.
Shirley loved and lived every moment she was given and 50 years of rheumatoid arthritis would not rob her of who she was.
Shirley gave a lot to many, to her husband and her friends, but by far she gave the most to all her children. As she held all of us in her heart, she will live in a special place in all our hearts forever, as an extraordinary loving wife, mother and friend
May God bless Shirley.
Shirley is survived by daughters, Kimberley Sanford, Lynn (Robin) Smillie; sons, Frank (Heather), and Jim; grandchildren, Mark (Bronwyn), Christopher, Jessica, Nicholas, and Justin; great-grandchildren, Glendon, Alexander, Brooklynn and Sydney.
She is also survived by her brother William; sister-in-law Viola; and many nieces and nephews.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband Sidney; son Sidney Jr.; son-in-law Robert “Bob” Sanford; sisters, Helen (Harold) Slaunwhite, Irene (Joe) Dugas; brothers, Ronald, Stanley (Joan); sister-in-law Barb.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial mass will be held at 10 am on Thursday January 18, in St. Vincent de Paul Parish, 320 Flying Cloud Drive, Dartmouth.
All are invited to join the family for a reception following mass at Atlantic Funeral Home Reception Centre, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth. Interment in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens to be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Arthritis Society of Canada.
Special thanks to the nursing staff of the ICU, 5.2 QEII.
