Bertha May (Bannerman)
Johnston, passed away Saturday, December 8, 2018 at the Aberdeen
Hospital. Born in New Glasgow on July 29, 1923, she was a daughter of
Blair and May (Donaldson) Bannerman. She was the last surviving member
of her immediate family. Her faith was an important part of her life,
and prior to her accidents and illnesses, she was very active in St.
Andrews Presbyterian Church in New Glasgow, devoting her time to the
Ladies Aid, the Guild, the Choir where she sang with her mother and
sister, Sunday school, CGIT and collection counting. For many years,
she volunteered at the Aberdeen Hospital Gift shop, delivered Meals on
Wheels, and enjoyed many games of bridge with her long-time card
partner, Gloria Munro. In earlier years, she enjoyed bowling with the
Ladies League at the Westside Bowling Lanes. She is survived by her
sons: Lee (Wendy), Porters Lake, NS; Fred (Rita), Sydney Mines, NS;
grandsons: Craig (Jennifer Cook), and their children Finlay and Alec,
Toronto, ON; Adam (Leeann), and their son Reilly, Charlottetown, PEI;
many nieces and nephews; and also by long-time friend and tenant, Carl
Carrigan. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, William
Donald Johnston, her sister, Donelda (Frank) White, and her brother,
Sandy (Ramona) Bannerman. Cremation has taken place under the
direction of the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. In respect of
her wishes, there will be no visitation. A private family graveside
service will be held at a later date. No flowers by request. Memorial
donations may be made to a charity of your choice. The family wishes
to thank the many people who helped Bertha in so many ways in the last
few years; your kindness and caring will always be
remembered.
