OBITUARY
Bernard Herbert Ward
15 February , 1935 – 30 September , 2018
Bernard Herbert George Ward passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, in Calgary, Alberta on Sunday, September 30, 2018.
Bernard was born in Oxbow, Saskatchewan in February, 1935 to Gordon and Elizabeth Ward. He married Donna Weissbach in October, 1963 and had two children, Kimberley and Donald. During his time in Oxbow, Bernard worked at the theatre owned by his parents. He attended Business College after high school and worked for Western Drilling Supply in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. In 1970 Bernard moved his family to Calgary and purchased Sunnyside Grocery. Over the years the store became known as “Bernie’s” and customers came in not only to make a purchase, but to chat with the owner. Bernard was known for his sense of humour, kindness and work ethic. An entire generation grew up buying penny candy at Bernie’s. Over the years the store became a meeting place for current and past residents of Sunnyside and Bernie was always ready to share a story or his opinion on the Flames’ last game or innumerable other topics.
Declining health precipitated a move to Bow-Crest Care Centre in February of 2018. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. C. McKenna and the staff at Bow-Crest for their care and compassion.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; daughter, Kimberley (married to Robert Langford); son, Donald; and Bernard’s siblings, Dorothy, Nelda, Richard and Lisa.
Bernard was not one for formality and made it clear to his family that he did not want to mark his passing with a funeral. Rather, he wanted to be remembered for the life he lived as a husband, father, brother and friend.
If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
