Obituary Overview
Arlene Hudson (nee Eliasson)
It is with profound sadness that the family of Arlene Hudson announces the passing of her spirit from this life to another in the early morning hours of September 9, 2018.
Arlene had no fear of death. She simply did not want to leave her beloved daughter Tricia, son-in-law Rob, grandchildren Tyler, Maddy and Riley and family dog Charlie girl. She leaves to mourn her passing, sister Pat and family, cousin Colleen and family, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Friends Roberta, Sandy, Edith and June are forever grateful for their time with Arlene and miss her dearly.
Arlene is likely enjoying a lively game of rummy with her beloved Mom Verna who predeceased her January 2018. Her late brother Gord, ex-husband George and Kelsey were sure to greet her so she wouldn’t get lost as she was prone to do in this life!
To know Arlene was and is, one of those gifts unique to those of us who had the privilege of sharing time with her on this journey. She was a woman full of grace and substance; her sense of empathy and compassion came from a place of her own hard fought recovery that opened a door that swung wide. A pivotal moment in her life came at the behest of her friend Roberta, when Arlene applied for and completed the New Careers Addiction Counselling program and embarked on a career with the AFM that lasted 20 years, the bulk of it at River House. The legacy of Arlene hunkering down with any woman desperate for recovery is one that offered an indelible gift of spiritual understanding free of alcohol and drugs.
Arlene was an honourable woman who possessed a keen intellect, a belly laugh sense of humour, and a belief system that she nourished with daily reflection and prayer. She loved books, crosswords, blues music, tea, all things old, movies, the metaphysical, canopies formed by trees, lipstick pink impatients, the moon, home, cool weather, rummy, Atticus Finch, Ireland and tradition. She loved food. Where to eat was always one of the first questions asked! Her favorites being The Garwood Grill, Santa Lucia, The Red Top, Sals, Good Earth and many others. This act of breaking bread with family and friends was so very significant to her. Above all else she loved her family, and doted on her grandchildren.
Arlene was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in May 2013. At no time did she allow the illness or treatment define her; rather, it strengthened her faith and resolve to live with hope and to care for others, a trait that remains deep-rooted in the memories of those coping with the loss of such an influential soul that graced our lives. Arlene left on her own terms. We witnessed her and Trish comforting her hospital care-givers hours before she drew her last breath in this life. Bless you all on 6th floor A wing, St. Boniface Hospital.
Every phone call that came her way she answered with “how are you?” Arlene, we are beyond sad and we miss you but we will live on with hope and we shall care for each other and others as you did. Faith, family and friends live on in your memory
As per Arlene’s wishes, a private graveside service will be held. In lieu of flowers, it was her request that donations be made in her name to the Ovarian Cancer Society.
