Alma Joan Ross
1954-2018
Devoted mother, wife, sister and daughter Joan Ross (nee
Champion)(64) was born in Hamilton, PEI and received her early
schooling in Hamilton and Kensington. A strong personality with an
early disposition toward equality in the workplace she was the first
woman to manage a liquor store in PEI and went on to work for the City
of Ottawa, Trinity Western University, the University College of the
Fraser Valley and the University of Northern British Columbia where
she fulfilled numerous roles including parking manager, auditor,
administrator and professor. Joan was a strong advocate of education
and spent her lifetime learning new things. She earned degrees from
Acadia (BA) and the University of Ottawa (MA) in Economics and later
in life, at 56, she obtained her PhD in Psychology from the University
of Northern British Columbia. She is survived by husband, Eric -White
Rock, BC, daughter Bree -Prince George, BC, sons Slade -Prince George,
BC and Scot-Fort McMurray, Alta, brother Willard(Sandra) –
Hamilton, PEI, sister Bev(Richard) – Culloden, NS and
brother-in-law Glenn(Carol)-Lower Sackville, NS. Joan was predeceased
by parents Horton and Leita Champion and father/mother in-law Frank
& Merna Ross. Joan is fondly remembered by her family as a
person with faith who valued others and had little time for the
unnecessary details of life. Joan possessed an amazing mind and memory
contributing greatly to the lives of all with whom she had contact. In
life, as in death, memories of her are filled with some of her most
quoted sayings which perfectly sum up her attitude toward life:
« Be Brave », « Nuts to this », « If you are not
living on the edge you are taking up too much space », and last
but not least, in an obituary that cannot be too long for fear of
inciting her complaint, a directive to those left behind, « Get on
with it. » As per Joan’s wishes there will be no
service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian
Cancer Society.
