Allan Roy Thomson
July 25, 1939-July 1, 2018
Passed away peacefully on July 1, 2018. Al was born in Abbotsford, BC where he had a humble upbringing on a small dairy farm. Al married his wife of 62 years and lifetime soul mate, Patricia in 1956. Within a year, they had their first son and at the age of 16, with only a grade 9 education, Al set out to join the work force. Realizing the odds were not in his favour, he worked days and went to school at night, eventually earning his grade 12 diploma. This allowed him enter trade school and earn 4th class Power Engineer ticket at age 18. All while working full time. To earn his 2nd class ticket, Al held many jobs and he and Pat moved to several towns throughout BC. Looking for a better opportunity for him and his family, Al read an ad for an Industrial Sales Rep covering Western Canada. He applied and with his experience and qualifications, was hired by Johns Manville Co. in 1963. Through hard work and determination, he outperformed the competition and established J-M as a leading brand in Canadian industry. In 1967, Al saw an opportunity to become a distributor for J-M and open his own business in Alberta. Risking his home and all he had acquired up to the age of 27, Al opened the family business now known as the A.R. Thomson Group. After several years of his determined sales work, business grew and Al opened another branch in Vancouver and moved the family back to BC. Over the years, through Al’s leadership and dedication of his family, support of friends and many outstanding employees, the business continued to grow. New locations were added across Canada and internationally. Over his lifetime, Al was a devoted family man who was highly dedicated to his wife Pat and five kids, providing unconditional support and invaluable guidance. He greatly appreciated his employees and operated his business with their best interests at heart. Al had very sharp wit and loved to have a laugh and be part of any social function. He had a strong belief in modesty, integrity and fair play in all aspects of his life. He is remembered as a true gentleman and a man who led by example, sacrificing today for a brighter future for his family and employees tomorrow. The world has lost a bright star, but his legacy, his ethics and his principles will shine on eternally. Al leaves behind his dear wife Pat, daughters Debbie and Lisa, sons Jim, Gord and Todd; Sisters Marj and Dorothy as well as 18 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and many cousins, nephews and nieces. A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday August 1, 2018 at the Hazelmere Golf Club located at 18150-8th Ave, Surrey, BC. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Canadian Cancer Society.
