Obituary Overview
Forever Loved
Alexander (Sandy) McLaren
October 23, 1919 – May 5, 2018
It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to this incredible man of 98 years.
Sandy will be forever loved and missed by his 8 children: Sandra (Joachim), Bernice, David (Marilyn), D’arcy (Elaine), Jeanne (Roger), Linda (Arthur), Sandy (Marlene), Duane (Charlene), his many grandchildren, great grandchildren, his brothers, Tommy (Marilyn) and Lindsey, close extended family and dear friends. He is predeceased by his first wife Jeanne; his second wife, Agnes; his sisters, Margaret and Kathy; and his brothers, Gavin, Fred and Jimmy.
Sandy was born in Crosscross, Scotland to Alexander and Meg McLaren and moved to Canada at the age of seven. The family made its way from the east coast and homesteaded near Camrose, Alberta. He enlisted in the Edmonton Regiment (CASF) on September 6, 1939 at 19 years of age. His bravery was honoured during World War II, receiving among other medals, the 4 star Military Medal of Bravery and France’s highest medal of honour.
He was discharged from duty in 1945 as a Sergeant Major and started a long career with the Edmonton Transit System and retired in 1976.
He married Jeanne Engley in 1946 and had 3 daughters and 1 son. Sadly, Jeanne passed away in 1965 and after some time, he met and married Agnes who had three sons and one daughter of her own.
After his retirement, he farmed on an acreage in Strathcona County. He also continued with his woodworking and sold many pieces at craft sales and gave just as many away. He loved watching hockey, football, musical shows, old movies, and entertaining his many visitors in his home. Going out for lunches and dinners was on the top of his list. He had a zest for life and people loved listening to his Scottish poems, songs, and stories of his past adventures.
Sandy’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the Kipnes Centre for Veterans for providing him with a loving home, care and compassion to our family in the last year and half of his life.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
