Lovingly remembered by sisters; Joyce Longstaff, Manchester, New Hampshire and Arlene Wright, Pompano Beach, Florida; brother Royce Plant (Carolyn) Bairdsville, NB; and brother- in-law, Alton Walker (Arlene) Tinker, NB; several nieces and nephews and their families. Aleta was predeceased by her husband of 62 years George in 2014, eldest daughter Evelyn in 2000, brothers Paul, Sheldon, Weymon, Marven, Keith (infancy) and sister Marilyn Baird.
Growing up on a farm Aleta learned the rewards of hard work, self-sufficiency and the love of God; values she carried throughout her life. When her mother became sick, she was required to leave school to look after her siblings. Later, a source of pride was achieving her high school equivalency certificate in 1975. Aleta’s love of learning and curiosity took her to visit many places including Guyana, Canadian Rockies and throughout Canada, Florida, Australia, New York City, Alaska, London, France and Italy. Attending concerts, movies, book club, community discussions, computer lessons, listening to CBC, and reading were a great source of pleasure. In 1985, Aleta received a certificate for Outstanding Volunteer Service for improving life in the community having delivered Meals on Wheels for more than 15 years. She also received the Canadian Red Cross Certificate of Merit in 1983 for outstanding voluntary service. A person of strong faith and principle, Aleta was a loyal member of her church family. She served tirelessly over the years in various capacities holding positions within ACW, Lay reader for the Parish of East Saint John within the Diocese of Fredericton (1988 – 1990), choir member, and team member of St. Luke’s Anglican Church Saint John Outreach Ministries. Her family was the most important part of her life and she took delight in everyone’s activities and successes, giving support and encouragement when needed. Any opportunity to spend time with her sisters brought her immense joy and happiness. The ultimate caregiver and homemaker, Aleta cared for her husband at home for 14 years. She always welcomed family and friends no matter the time of day. One would not leave without being offered a home cooked meal, cup of tea, muffins or cookies. Aleta’s grace, strength, and courage never more on display after the death of her much-loved oldest daughter Evelyn in 2000, and the death of her cherished youngest sister Marilyn in 2007.
The family would like to express gratitude to all those involved in her care at Tucker Hall, Parkland Saint John, NB, and also for the kindness she continued to receive from residents and staff of Carleton Hall after she moved to Tucker Hall. The attentive and caring companionship of Edna MacDonald, Tracy Pursey and Linda Breen has been most appreciated.
In keeping with Aleta’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) on Wednesday, October 24th, 2018 from 1-2:30pm. A Celebration of Aleta’s Life will follow visitation at 3:00 from the Fundy Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will take place on Thursday, October 25th, at 2:00 pm in Saint Georges Anglican Cemetery, Bairdsville, NB. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in Aleta’s memory are asked to consider the Evelyn Walker Memorial Bursary at UNBSJ, St Luke’s Anglican Church Saint John Outreach Ministries, Saint Georges Anglican Cemetery Fund, Bairdsville, NB or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
“When I come to the end of the road and the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom filled room. Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little, but not too long and not with your head down low. Remember the love that we have had, miss me but let me go.”
