Obituary of Alan Hanley
Alan Douglas Hanley, age 91, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his wife Helene Vera (nee Fraser) Hanley and family on Monday July 23, 2018, in Chatham, Ontario.
Douglas was born on October 3, 1926 in Aylmer, Ontario to parents William (Joe) Edgar Hanley and Nellie (Eleanor) Telfer (Robson) Hanley. He graduated from University of Toronto in 1948 with a degree in Architecture. After graduation he began his career as an Architect by completing his apprenticeship with Joe Story. He later established his own practice in Chatham Ontario, which he operated for 25 years. He designed the Chatham Public Library, St Andrew’s Residence, Indian Creek Public School and Wallaceburg’s Municipal Building to name a few. Douglas was Chairman of the Chatham-Kent Planning Board for 5 years in the 1970’s. Douglas served as Stewardship director for Compassion Canada for 3 years before joining the Architecture firm of Jim Jordan, and later Peter Cook.
Douglas was a great family man and a loving father. He married Helene Vera Fraser, daughter of the late Vera and Peter Fraser, on September 28, 1963 and the couple had 2 children together, Elizabeth Anne Rae (spouse Edgar (Ted) Allen Rae ) and Dr. Stuart Douglas Hanley (spouse Melinda Ann Veroba-Hanley). His grandchildren are Jonathon Michael Calhoun, Dylan Matthew Rae, Steven Allan Rae, Gillian Elizabeth Rae, Grant Douglas Hanley and Heather Marie Hanley.
Douglas is survived by his sister-in-law Pamela Hanley, his niece Jennifer Hanley-Sheppard and nephew Michael Hanley. He was predeceased by his brother (Jack) John R. Hanley.
He is also survived by his sister-in-law Jeanne Conroy, brother-in-law Ted Conroy, nephew Douglas Warwick, niece Mary Elizabeth Warwick and the late Dr. Robert Sales.
Douglas was a gifted jazz pianist who enjoyed playing for Rotary, social events, and accompanying his wife Helene. He was the organist at Our Saviour’s Evangelical Lutheran Church for several years. Douglas received two Paul Harris Fellowship Awards for his service in the community through Rotary. His family and friends will always remember him for his quick wit and mischievous sense of humour.
Friends and family will be received at DENNING’S OF CHATHAM (519-352-2390), 4 Victoria Avenue, on Thursday, July 26, 2018 from 6 to 9 o’clock, and again on Friday from 12 noon until the time of the Funeral Service at 1 o’clock. Rev. Dr. Margaret Moriyama officiating. A reception will follow at Our Saviour’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.
All are welcome to attend and celebrate Doug’s life. The family would like to thank VON (Sue Arnold, RPN), and the Bayshore Homecare PSWs for the care and compassion shown towards Doug and the family. Donations in Doug’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart & Stroke Foundation, or Compassion Canada.
