Alan was a man of integrity, intelligence and
humour who leaves relatives and friends with
a wealth of warm memories and great tales.
He joins his wife and love of 64 years, Marilyn
(nee Woodford), who passed in 2015. Born in
Wellington, New Zealand, Alan attended
school while working part-time on the wharf
and, of course, playing rugby, a sport which
was to be a life long passion. In 1943, at the
age of 16, he joined the Royal New Zealand Air
Force where he served until his plane was
shot down, losing close friends and blinding
one eye. It was during the war that Alan
became a pacifist – comforting a dying
combatant in his arms. Alan immigrated to
Canada in his 20s, where he found a home,
the love of his life and his vocation. A natural
with numbers and people, Alan built a career
in real estate, developing homes on the north
shore as well as investing in property. He
celebrated his success modestly, remaining
in Marilyn’s childhood home, while enjoying
friends, travel, a ‘little” gambling, rugby and
always giving back to the community. A true
dichotomy: a socialist entrepreneur. Rugby
was his sport. After playing with the North
Shore All Blacks in the ’50s, in the ’70s he
became a strong advocate of the Capilano
Rugby Club supporting and fundraising for,
amongst others, legacy scholarships, player
development activities such as the New
Zealand Exchange Program, and the
women’s program and MVP award. An
honorary life member, he will be recognized
at the November 17 home game. A proud
Canadian, he never forgot his roots (nor lost
his accent). His affluence was always shared,
whether it be to scholarships in Marilyn’s
name, to Burnaby Hospital, or to the Burnaby
Fire Fighters Charitable Society amidst
others. His legacy continues this philanthropy.
Alan Codyre left an indelible influence, not
only on his community, but on the lives of
those who were lucky enough to have known
him. Alan, you are cherished, honoured and
loved. Alan requested no memorial service.
Instead, toast his life with a Guinness.
