Obituary for
Abram Neufeld
Abram J. Neufeld April 17, 1923 – May 27, 2018 of Winnipeg, formerly of Killarney.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Ida Horwat (Dennis), Madelaine Friesen (Phil), Armin Neufeld (Joan), Waldie Neufeld (Sharon), Elvira Born (Phil), Anita Ward (Dale), Rita Mae Braun (Garry), and Renette Neufeld (Shari Manners), 23 grandchildren and spouses, and over fifty great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his dear wife Helen in 2010.
Though Abram J. begin life in the Eastern Ukraine, he lived most of his childhood eleven miles south of Killarney, MB on a farm near the USA border. His early years were influenced by home, church and school. While the Plum Hollow School provided the mental challenge, the Lena Church supplied guidance in the search for identity and meaning in life. He took high school at Mennonite Collegiate Institute in Gretna, MB from 1937-40. In 1948 the Lena Whitewater Mennonite Church called Abram J. and his Uncle, F. F. Enns, to serve as ministers. In 1956, Abram was elected to be the lead minister and served in that capacity until the congregation closed its doors in 1968. He married Helen Sawatzky on July 16, 1949, who was his faithful companion and prayer partner. They continued farming in the Smith Hill/Enterprise area of Manitoba, raising eight children on the farm. Dad was a student at heart and particularly enjoyed reading, teaching and preaching. He remained committed to the Christian faith in the Anabaptist tradition and, like his grandfather Enns, encouraged Nachfolge (Following). In the winter of 1975, they moved to Winnipeg where he finished his B.A. at Mennonite Brethren Bible College with honours and completed many Master of Arts level courses at the University of Winnipeg. During the early 1980’s and onwards, he was involved in church work with the Mennonite Brethren Conference and the Missionary Church. Since that time he has been involved in other churches, mostly in the area of teaching, serving and preaching. For dad, serving the church had been a joy and delight.
Sincere thanks for the care and compassion of the staff and Dr. Tunovec at Concordia Hospital.
The viewing will take place at Friends Funeral Services, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg at 11:00 a.m. on June 1, 2018. A celebration of his life will be held at McIvor Avenue Mennonite Brethren Church, 200 McIvor Ave. Winnipeg, at 1:30 p.m. on June 1, 2018.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
